What are the advantages and disadvantages of wearing a wig?

Today I'm going to be talking about the pros and cons of wearing wigs.

As many of you may have noticed, a lot of people are wearing wigs—black women, brown women, white women, pink women, yellow women, black, gray, whatever. Wigs are having this huge moment right now in our society. All types of women and men are wearing wigs. And today I'm going to discuss the pros of wearing wigs, the cons of wearing wigs, and everything in between.

I want to start with the pros of wearing wigs.

  • The first pro of wearing wigs is that they're so freaking versatile. How many different hairstyles do you have?
  • If you wear a wig, you can buy short wigs, like pixie cut wigs. You can buy wigs that are down to your butt, 18,20,24 inches, and anything in between.
  • You can buy wigs with bangs; you can buy wigs with side parts, middle parts, lace wigs, and lace front wigs, where you can choose which part you want for the day.
  • The second pro is that a lot of people, if they're thinking of trying a new hairstyle, might start with a wig.
  • So they might want to cut their hair into a bob and start by putting on a wig to see how it looks. Or instead of cutting your actual hair, you can just wear the wig. That's the main draw, I think. It's like, instead of having to commit to a hairstyle, if you want pink hair, you can go out and buy a wig that is exactly what your dreams are.
  • The third pro of wearing wigs, especially for black women, is that it's called a protective style.
  • A lot of times, we are worried about the health of our hair and how we're protecting it. When you're going about having twistouts every day, straightening your hair every day, or even just detangling your hair every day, that's actually manipulation of your hair. That can break off your hair. It can dry your hair. Just in any way, it can damage your hair. That's why a lot of black women like to wear protective styles, especially under a wig. Right up your hair or twist up your hair and keep it that way for at least a day, at least two days, but at most months or weeks. With the wig, you're probably not going to wear it for months at least, I hope. That's my go-to protective style because I can do it. I don't have to go to anyone and have them do it for me. I can literally put on a wig, keep it on for a week, take my braids out at the end of the week, wash my hair, and do it all over again if I want it.
  • The fourth pro about wearing wigs is that you can manipulate their hair as much as you want.
  • I can curl and straighten this hair every day if I want to. But I mean, for the most part, you can curl this hair as much as you want. You can straighten it as much as you want. I have so much fun switching up my styles every day. But you go to someone; they braid your hair up for you, then they sew it on, and then it looks all good. And sometimes they put a mesh over whatever, but then on that second day, you start to fill that little itch up in there that you just can't get it. You just can't get that spot, and it's only going to get worse. So literally, like not being able to really tend to your hair for however long you had to sew in, and usually probably a month or two months you wouldn't have access to your scalp. So if your scalp is itching or if it's really dry and you just want to put on some oil, you really don't have access to it. But with wigs, what's so amazing is you can literally put it on, and then at the end of the night, girl, you can whip it right off and live your best life, whether that's like oiling your scalp, giving yourself your little scout massages, or just letting it breathe and being able to scratch that itch that has just been waiting for you all day. It just gives me goosebumps when I'm just thinking about it.
  • The fifth pro of wearing a wig is how long it can last.
  • For the wigs that I've bought, I don't pay an outrageous amount. If I buy a wig, I usually buy it when it's on sale of some sort. And so it ends up being no more than $350; I don't think I've ever paid more than $150 for a wig. And I don't think I've ever paid less than $90. You don't really want to pay. You don't. I mean, if you want a quality wig, you don't want to pay, probably like $30. I paid $40 for a wig before, and it was a bomb, except it only lasted me like a mom. But anyway, that's beside the point. My wigs usually last me at least a year. And I wear my wigs frequently. I mean, now I rotate between a few of them. But one wig I've had for, I believe, almost a year now, and it did start to get a little bit matted. I mean, it was curly hair. I had put products in it. I was wearing it every day for the whole summer.

Now we're going to move into the cons of wearing wigs.

  • One con of wearing a wig is that it makes it look natural. This is a task in itself. It's so hard to make them look real.
  • And I've had my friends ask me, "Do I look at your wig and I don't see that it's a wig?
  • If you can get a wig that has lace, then it's going to look more like your scalp. It's going to be more of a color, like your scalp. So that's already a good place to start. After you get a lace front, it's going to have extra lace. You're going to have to dye the knots along the way because the hair is going to be tied to the lace. And so you can kind of see the dark spots, especially if you part your hair. You may have to pluck the hairline or pluck where you're going to part your hair because people don't like that naturally the hair is thinner around the edges.
  • Another con about wearing wigs is hasn't is wou con about wearing wigs is having to apply gel or glue. You will have to apply gel or glue to have it stick to your hair.
  • If you do want it to be more secure, of course, you could just use the combs in the wig or you could use an elastic band. But, honestly, I need security in my life. So I put on gel. I used to use gel to secure my wigs. But it is; it does get a little messy when you're trying to take it off. Sometimes I feel like when I'm taking my wig off, I may be damaging my edges. Your hair has this hard product on it, so I have to be extra careful not to damage my hair or any part of my hair that has that glue on it.
  • The third con, in my opinion, of wearing wigs is having to lay your actual hair down underneath the wig.
  • I've come to terms with the fact that the flatter and tighter your base, the more realistic your hair is going to look. Some people are kind of lazy, and they'll literally just put their hair in a bun or something and not really lay it down, then put a wig on top, and then it's literally up to here. If you take time to twist or braid your hair properly underneath your wig, it's going to look a lot better. It's going to look a lot closer to your scalp, like it's coming out of your hair.
  • Another con is having to know how to flat twist or braid your hair to make it look good, or you're going to have to just slick it.

I hope that you all enjoyed this sharing topic and found it helpful, and I'll share a new topic in my next one. Bye.
